By joining this group, I affirm that I will provide sound advice to all those who need it and I will not be afraid to ask for advice or help when I am in need.
I will exemplify leadership qualities and I will be a positive role model to my peers and in my community. I will adhere to the following code:
I. I will not be a victim of circumstance.
II. I will not accept the norm nor will I allow anyone to degrade me or try to lessen my self-worth.
III. I will play an integral role in society and understand that the future of my Nation depends upon my actions today.
IV. I must be conscious of my decisions because I am a leader.
V. I will conduct myself as a responsible young adult capable of making my own decisions and standing up against anyone who will try to make me think otherwise.
VI. I am worthy of respect.
CommonUnity Poetry is a community action project started to give inner city youth a creative means to effectively voice their opinions, while promoting creativity, instilling pride and establishing a sense of accomplishment in difficult tasks while strengthening the community and promoting excellence through Spoken Word and the arts.
There are 2 phases to the project.
CommonUnity is currently an online community. We have forums, a group, and blogs designed to get our youth talking. As we build our community online, we will find mentors and moderators who can provide sound advice concerning a number of subjects...or just be a shoulder to lean on. We also have a playlist of positive, conscious music and lessons to increase confidence and self-esteem. We expect to move into our "home" in the Spring of 2010 which will bring us to phase two.
In the second phase, the CommonUnity Poetry will be designed to be an after school meeting place for our youth. While there, the focus will be on tutoring, community service, the arts, and sharing like thoughts and ideas with other children. Counseling and mentoring will be available by our volunteers. Different projects will be completed each quarter. Some of the projects will be to have the youth publish their very own book of original poetry and market it (book signings), poetry slams with possible entries into national youth slams, and to create a community project designed to help others in different neighborhoods.
