The Miracle at Providence Spring

Mee Maw told me
when I was little
a tale 'bout a war
that we call civil

my Great-great-
great-great-Grandfather
Fought for Uncle Sam
in that #$%^ slaughter

He served the country
he loved to the fullest
and the battlefield filled
with blood and bullets

the bodies dropped
like leaves in Autumn
but he fought and fought
til the Confederates caught'im

they brought'im on down
to Andersonville
he musta felt like he fell
and landed in hell

while surrounded by walls
that were built by slaves
thousands were killed
and filled the graves

they got ill with the plague
or shot by the guards
times got real hard
and a lot of them starved

the water dried up
when summertime came
and my Grandfather cried
"All I Want is some RAIN!"

he dropped like a tear
to his knees with a prayer
but before he finished
he could see in the air-

thunderstorm forming
up above the prison
his prayer was rewarded-
for the Lord had listened

A lightning bolt struck
a spot nearby
and a geyser erupted
and shot to the sky

the prisoners jumped up
and danced and sang
they named that spot
the Providence Spring

For the Lord gave them water
to drink and to bathe
and my Great-great-great-great grandfather
was thankfully saved.
